Feb. 10, 2012. Penguin Books changes access rules for Kindle Users and eBooks.

As InfoDocket reports, “In a stunning development, Penguin Group has extricated itself from its contract with OverDrive, the primary supplier of ebooks to public libraries." Overdrive is the parent company of the WILBOR consortium. As part of this pullout, Penguin Group has also required the all Kindle checkouts of the remaining Penguin titles be conducted via a USB cable and a computer, instead of via WiFi and over-the-air. We believe that this affects all Kindle devices, including the Fire. Updated instructions are now available. If you wish, you can use these instructions to download all Kindle content from WILBOR.

Or, if you like, you can get a little more fancy. Publishers that are not in the Penguin Group can still be downloaded "the old way," over-the-air. When you find a title you'd like to check out, look at the details of the book and check the publisher. The Penguin Group publishes imprints such as Viking, G. P. Putnam's Sons, The Penguin Press, Riverhead Books, Dutton, Penguin Books, Berkley Books, Gotham Books, Portfolio, New American Library, Plume, Tarcher, Philomel, Grosset & Dunlap, Puffin, and Frederick Warne. Their children's imprints also include Dial Books, Speak, Firebird, and Razorbill. Publishers that are not on this list can be downloaded "over-the-air" using the older instructions, below.

Over-The-Air Kindle Downloads

We have a basic guide to using the Kindle for WILBOR (pre-Fire) , and a checkout guide for WILBOR with Kindle. We also have a guide for Kindle Fire.

What about Kindle Fire?
Kindle Fire is a little easier, even. Open the Internet browser, Silk, and navigate to the WILBOR webpage, wilbor.lib.overdrive.com. From there, search for your book, go through the checkout process, and choose the "Get For Kindle" button. The download will go to your Fire through your Kindle account. We have a Kindle Fire handy guide to help.

Have a Kindle Fire? Want your Nook books on it?
Step 1: Go to the Kindle Fire's settings (upper-right) and tap "More," then "Device." Turn "Allow Installation of Applications" to "on." You'll get a warning--just tap "OK."
Step 2: Launch your Fire's browser and head to m.getjar.com. At the top of the page, search for "Nook." When you find it, tap Download. You'll be asked to download the GetJar app. Tap "Download GetJar." Step 3: When the download completes, tap the file in the downloads list (which you can access from your Kindle's top bar), and select "Install." Step 4: Once GetJar installs, find it in your Fire's app library, open it, and search for "Nook" again. Tap "Download," review the app's permissions, and tap "Install." The Nook app will show up in your Kindle Fire's library.

You can even use your Kindle Fire for WILBOR audiobooks
On the Fire, tap the gear icon in the upper right, tap more, tap device. Change Allow Installation of Applications from Unknown Sources to On. Download the Overdrive ANDROID app from Overdrive. Our sources say, "The download button isn't the one you want; choose the one included in the sentence under it that says something about Android from Overdrive." These will play MP3s for sure.
